CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT

ABOUT

Oil Painting - Ink - Digital Illustration - Hand Rendered Text
This is my most recent project that explores childhood nostalgia within the context of rural youth culture. I navigated this through the lens of curiosity in creativity and how I feel we loose this feeling as we grow older. A huge influence for me as a person and artist was the time spent with my Dad growing up on Portland, Dorset (a tiny little island off of the Dorset coast). A place that holds so many memories is the workshop in our garden during this time. As a curious kid I would take it upon myself to stick my head through the cat flap to see what my Dad was up to in the workshop that day. As I grew older, this was where I learnt to play the drums, learnt to build things, gained an appreciation for music and sparked my passion for art. This is the setting that this piece fits within, holding weird and wonderful childhood memories.
This piece has enabled me to navigate grieving my dad and the childlike feelings of curiosity. Its confidence and surrealist nature play on all these aspects, contrasting the insecurity I feel about sharing this part of my life.
